Portia White
Portia White was an iconic figure in Canadian music. Though we may never be able to witness her remarkable live performances, her legacy still lives on today. Portia White pushed the boundaries of society and fought for social justice through her art. Her work inspired change and made a lasting impression on our culture.
From a young age, Portia began singing in the church choir with her mother. She soon broadened her horizons, seeking out formal training at the Halifax Conservatory of Music as a contralto. After nearly three decades of constant practice and dedication to the craft, she became the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international acclaim.
