Highway Of Tears

The piece is named for the Highway of Tears, a roughly 724-kilometre stretch of Highway 16 in British Columbia where dozens of women — most of them Indigenous — have disappeared or been murdered since 1969. The RCMP officially lists 18 cases, but Indigenous communities and advocacy groups say the real number is significantly higher, with some estimates exceeding 40. Many cases remain unsolved.

The piece is part of a broader body of work addressing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), a crisis affecting Indigenous communities across Canada.
