The piece is connected to Orange Shirt Day, observed every September 30th in Canada as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day traces back to Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school when she was six years old. Her story became the origin of the phrase "Every Child Matters," now used to honour residential school survivors and remember the children who never returned home.
