We are delighted to share that Duane and Urszula Kumala-Thomas have been declared the winners of a prestigious project at the Woodstock Art Gallery, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the legendary artist Florence Carlyle. This special initiative invites gifted artists from across Ontario to contribute to the Bruce Flowers Sculpture Garden. The Kumala-Thomas duo has captivated the selection committee with their stunning proposal titled "BIRD SET FREE."
Inspiration Behind BIRD SET FREE
"BIRD SET FREE" is deeply inspired by Carlyle's affectionate nickname, "Bird," a moniker that symbolizes her free spirit and enduring legacy. The sculpture explores powerful themes of confinement and freedom, resonating deeply with Carlyle's narratives and now interpreted through Duane and Urszula's artistic lens.
The piece depicts a bird triumphantly emerging from a constricting birdcage and corset, symbolizing liberation and the breaking of societal constraints. This powerful imagery is crafted using a thoughtful blend of historical and modern materials, with support from Baird Machines, ensuring the sculpture is not only visually captivating but also rich in symbolic meaning.
